After realizing the many needs our local community face on a daily basis, doing some research, being inspired by similar projects in the area, and seeing the benefits and growth within those communities, the iCebo Early Childhood Development Centre was established during April 2012 and registered as a Non-Profit Organisation on 4 December 2012.

The organisation is based in the isolated, rural and under developed coastal village of Mngcibe, Wild Coast, Eastern Cape which falls under the Nyandeni District.  The impoverished local community has no access to basic services as the municipal infrastructure is just about non-existent.  There is no ESKOM, no sanitation facilitities and municipal water supply (which was only implemented in 2012) is seldom in operation and rarely safe for human consumption.  The nearest clinic is a 2-3 hour walk away and the closest hospital is 40km away and only accessible by 4x4.

The majority of the local population are illiterate, do not speak English and there are no formal employment opportunities.  The main source of employment for community members remains that offered by the migrant labour system at the mines in Gauteng, sugar cane farms in Kwazulu Natal and fruit farms in the Cape.  This basically means that the community members “left behind” are the woman, children and the elderly.

The organisation aims to develop a pre-school, library, after-care centre and various other community based projects to assist in the general wellbeing and upliftment of the local community.

We believe that giving children a good start in life means ensuring them good health, proper nutrition and early learning.

  • We need funding for cement, bricks, windows, doors, thatch grass, paint etc to enable us to complete the building of the preschool.

  • As well as setting up a preschool we are also going to be building a library/media centre. We would like to have a couple of computers for students to access after school to assist with homework and projects.

  • Books books books for the library - young and old are needed. These kids are like sponges, and devour any "reading"/looking material they can get. Imagine what impact a proper library could have.

  • The fact that this is such a rural and remote area makes a project like this rather challenging. Logistics of building and getting materials here and the fact that our villages have no municipal infrastructure, electricity, sanitation or permanent running water we will also be needing items such as solar panels, deep cycle batteries, invertor, generators, water tanks etc

  • We require the services of an accountant to assist with annual returns to SARS and Dept of Social Development.

  • There is SO much we still need ie, classrooms, kitchen, storage, ablution, desks, small plastic tables & chairs.

  • One of our main issues would be staff salaries. Schooling will be free, but we will have to pay teachers, cleaning staff, maintenance and garden staff.   The rural preschool teachers monthly salary avg about R1 500.

  • We also have to train 2 preschool teachers (course duration 1 year @ R12 500 each and is recognised by SA National Qualifications Board).

Should you be able to assist in any way, kindly contact us at donations@icebo.org.za OR call Lu on 082 795 3944.  We are a registered nor-profit organisation so all donations made to iCEBO ECD is tax deductable.  Contact us for iCEBO ECD banking details.
